Biography

TRAINING: I start putting work in around 9 in the morning, most of the time warming up with a couple rolls of BJJ. Then I jump straight into my strength and conditioning, finishing around noon. The next couple hours are spent running around doing errands or taking a nap, it just depends. Then back to the gym for pro practice. I finish off my day with grappling and some yoga. I spent a lot of time in the gym for this fight.

When and why did you start training for fighting? 2005. I just wanted to get in shape. My first trainer asked me if I wanted to compete, and I’m not one to ever say "no," so I took the fight. The rest is history.

What ranks and titles have you held? MMAXX Fights 155lb champion (Mexico),
Blue belt in BJJ

Do you have any heroes? None

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It means everything to me - eight years of hard work has paid off.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? No, went to art institute.

What was your job before you started fighting? Worked at a furniture company.

Favorite grappling technique: Crucifix

Favorite striking technique: Boxing
• Pro since 2006

• Five wins by submission (3 RNC, armbar, reverse triangle choke), seven by knockout

• 10 first round finishes, five in a minute or less

• Scored 57 second submission win over Strikeforce vet James Terry in June of 2013

• Origin of nickname: “When I first started my career I was fighting down in Mexico, beating most of their top guys. It was getting harder to get a fight because guys will pull out. So the promoter and the fans gave me the name “El Cucuy.” With that being said, I think a nickname should be given to you.”
