Biography

TRAINING: A typical day's training for me is generally a morning and evening session and sometimes doubling sessions into each other - jiu-jitsu into wrestling, etc. And I've always gotta find time to get down to the beach and jump in the ocean too.

When and why did you start training for fighting? I loved the individual components of MMA - boxing and BJJ - and trained them to stay fit for my surfing career. I started competing in both and it led to MMA.

What ranks and titles have you held? PWP bantamweight title, Combat8 bantamweight title and team member for Australia as a lightweight in 'The Smashes' TUF

Do you have any heroes? BJ Penn, the ANZACS, Les Darcy

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It’s the pinnacle of the sport that I have fell in love with and dedicated my last seven years to. It’s a huge honor to be part of the UFC.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? No - I finished high school though.

What was your job before you started fighting? Professional big wave surfer and also finished my trade as a carpet layer.

Ranks in any martial arts styles: BJJ purple belt, black belt carpet layer...

Favorite grappling technique: Triangle

Favorite striking technique: Knees

• Pro since 2006

• Six wins by submission (5 RNC, triangle armbar), three by knockout

• Seven first-round finishes

• Competed at 155 pounds on TUF Smashes

• Brought back for semifinal TUF Smashes fight when Mike Wilkinson was forced out due to injury

• Origin of nickname: “I've had plenty over the years, Manchild, Manquail. But Vas is the one that has stuck, which is just an abbreviation of my surname Vaculik.”
