UFC 191 Main Card

Main Event: Demetrious Johnson defeats John Dodson by unanimous decision to retain UFC flyweight championship
It wasn’t a complete shut-out, but it was pretty close. Champion Demetrious Johnson showed his class and defeated challenger John Dodson by unanimous decision (50-45, 49-46, 49-46)

They said it:
Demetrious Johnson: “First off I want to thank everyone in Las Vegas for coming out to watch my fight. John Dodson said I was a plague to the division, but look at my face, I’m a pretty (guy). I’m a hard worker and I knew John Dodson was going to come in and be a hard worker – I love working hard. I have the best coaches in the world, the man in charge has been at it for 16 years.”

Co-Main Event: Andrei Arlovski defeats Frank Mir by unanimous decision
Two warriors of the sport went at it for 15 minutes. It went to the scorecards and the judges gave it to Arlovski by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).

They said it:
Andrei Arlovski: “I’m disappointed that it went three rounds, but it’s a victory, it’s good. I definitely underestimated him.”
Frank Mir: “It’s been a while since we’ve trained together so the fact that we were training partners wasn’t a factor. I thought I did what it took to win the fight, I had the takedowns and I landed the shots. I did what it took, just look at his face.”

Anthony Johnson defeats Jimi Manuwa by KO
‘Rumble’ was in complete control of this matchup, winning by KO at :28 of the 2nd round.

They said it:
Anthony Johnson: “When I have guys like Neil Melanson and Henri Hooft in my corner, we all have the same goal – to be the best – and that really works out in my favor. Neil has been amazing since coming to the Blackzilians, I’m really glad to have him. He’s brought so much fire to our team from day one, it’s amazing to see the difference he’s made in our team. I don’t feel like I really improved anything, I just wanted to get out there and try something new in my grappling. Even though I didn’t get the submission, I was in a position to try. I have nothing but respect for Jimi, he’s going to go a long way. I want the title and I’m going to keep on fighting until I get it. Whoever the UFC gives me, I’m going to keep on knocking them down.”

Corey Anderson defeats Jan Blachowicz by unanimous decision
The fight went the distance, but the scorecards showed the fight wasn’t really close. Anderson won by unanimous decision (30-25, 30-25, 29-26).

They said it:
Corey Anderson: “That’s the type of performance we train cardio for. To push the pace and dominate the fight. My game is evolving everyday. I beat a guy in the top-15 and I most definitely deserve to be there now. Gian Villante beat me and ended up in the top-15 and I feel like I deserve to be at least 14 now. I’ll take whatever the UFC gives me.”

Paige VanZant defeats Alex Chambers by submission
Paige VanZant put on a dominating performance Saturday night, culminating it with an armbar submission on Alex Chambers at 1:01 of the 3rd round.

They said it:
Paige VanZant: “I don’t think my dominance is necessarily due to maturity, it’s my camp. My first fight, I was new with Ultimate Fitness (Team Alpha Male). Over the next few years I just look to keep improving with them and stick with this camp. I can’t wait to celebrate this win with my Grandpa.”
Alex Chambers: “Her striking seemed a little better than I thought it would be. She’s definitely relentless. I knew she would be relentless, but I guess I didn’t think it would be like that. Everything she did surprised me.”

UFC 191 Prelims

Ross Pearson defeats Paul Felder via split decision
This matchup went the distance, but when it went to the judges scorecard the decision went to Pearson (28-29, 30-27, 29-28).

They said it:
Ross Pearson: “We prepared to counter all of Paul’s spinning moves and it worked out well. I was really frustrated after my last fight with Evan Dunham, I felt like he didn’t really bring it, so I was really happy to get paired with a guy like Paul. I knew he’d keep moving forward and that’s what he did. I also enjoyed the short notice fight and not having to think about my opponent for 12 weeks. I’m going to take a little vacation to Hawaii now. It’s my one year anniversary and my wife and I are finally going on our honeymoon tomorrow.”
Paul Felder: “I feel like these guys hit me but they can’t slow me down. I’m landing shots and keeping the pressure. In my mind, maybe the fight is going differently, I don’t know but I feel like I’m constantly walking my opponent down. This one hurts. It hurts more than the Edson Barboza loss did. My last two fights haven’t gone the way I would have liked them to, but they prove that I absolutely belong with the toughest scrappers and strikers in the game. I can’t wait to get back in there and fight again, I’m ready to go next week, let’s do it.”

John Lineker defeats Francisco Rivera by submission
It looked like a game of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots early in the fight, but Lineker took charge and put a guillotine choke on Rivera to win at 2:08 of the 1st round.

They said it:
John Lineker: “I wanted to get in there and just swing away. That’s what I like to do, it happened exactly how I wanted it to. I was surprised I finished it via submission, I’m always looking for the knockout, but the opportunity presented itself and I took it. I don’t pick opponents, whoever the UFC picks, I’m waiting.”
Francisco Rivera: “I jumped out of my game plan and got sucked into a brawl. When we’re both that type of fighter, we just let our hands fly and see what happens. My game plan went out the window, I should have just relaxed, slowed down and listened to my team.”

Raquel Pennington defeats Jessica Andrade by submission
The rematch between the two was a back-and-forth affair until late in the second round when Pennington took control and submitted Andrade by rear naked choke at 4:58 of Round 2.

They said it:
Raquel Pennington: “It’s not every day that you get to register a win in the UFC on your birthday and like I said to Joe Rogan, this one was dedicated to a good friend of mine who recently passed away. My family was loud in the crowd and that’s just what I needed. I was really looking forward to fighting Liz Carmouche, she’s ranked in the top-10, but after she got hurt I was really just happy that Jessica stepped up so I could still fight. It was also my opportunity to get revenge from my last fight with Jessica. I’m done letting my fights go to the judges. I feel it’s too often that I feel like I won or I’m close to winning and the judges hand it to the other person. I want Leslie Smith, Cat Zingano or Holly Holm. Someone ranked in the top-10 because my goal is to work my way up there myself.”
Jessica Andrade: “Overall it was a good fight. The air here is a lot drier than what I’m used to and it made me feel queasy in the choke. If it went to the third round, I was growing more comfortable with the fight and felt like it was my fight. I know how good Raquel is on the ground and that was my main concern. Raquel is more technical, but not as good in the striking department. I know she was more technical on the ground and she got a chance and took it.”

Tiago Trator defeats Clay Collard by split decision
It was a pretty even fight throughout, but Tiago Trator won by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

They said it:
Tiago Trator: “From start to end, it was a war. It was one of the most difficult fights I’ve ever fought. I hope to keep training more and more to continue to put on a show. His taunting definitely motivated me. I was very prepared for the fight, but I like fights that are battles – they not only please the UFC, but the world in general. Now, I can’t wait to get my next fight locked in.”
Clay Collard: “I’m just here to show up and fight. I always look to put on a show and I feel I did that tonight. I’m a fighter, I work on every aspect of the game: wrestling, jiu jitsu, striking; I’m trying to evolve in it all. That’s what I do.”

Joe Riggs defeats Ron Stallings via disqualification
Ron Stallings was disqualified 2:28 into Round 2 of the fight after using an illegal kick against Joe Riggs.

They said it:
Joe Riggs: “I’m a little disappointed. That was a fight I was easily going to win. I got poked in the eye in the first round and that kick just went right through my eye. Obviously, I don’t want to win like that or a fight to end like that especially when I would’ve killed him – I won the first round. I’ll give him a rematch, it wasn’t fair the way the fight ended. If Ron wants it and the UFC wants it, let’s do a rematch, it’s an easy fight.”
Ron Stallings: “I’m disappointed. I understand that the kick was illegal, but it wasn’t intentional. The damage to his eye was from jabs I landed earlier in the fight, damage that was legal. He got me with a good shot and I wanted to give that back to him.”

Joaquim Silva defeats Nazareno Malegarie by split decision
The opening fight of the night went the distance, but Silva won by split decision (28-29, 30-27, 30-27) to improve his record to 8-1-0.

They said it:
Joaquim Silva: “Not only was Nazareno in The Ultimate Fighter house with me, he was my best friend in the house. We trained together all of the time and really helped each other become better fighters. We were both really bummed when we got matched up against each other; and then when the fight got rescheduled, we were even more bummed that we didn’t get matched up with someone else. Knowing him that well helped me build my game plan for the fight without question. I’d like to stay undefeated and earn a crack at the title in a couple years. This was not a good performance from me. I broke my right hand in the first round and then broke my left finger later on. This fight wasn’t as good as my fights usually are and you’ll see better from me in the future.”
Nazareno Malegarie: “I wasn’t nervous at all even though it was my first UFC fight. I know Joaquim from TUF, he has a very heavy right hand, that’s all. He was better tonight.”
