Main event UFC welterweight five-round fight: Stephen Thompson defeats Rory MacDonald


It started out slow but after 25 minutes the speed and awkward style of Stephen Thompson overwhelmed Rory MacDonald as “Wonderboy” cruised to a unanimous decision win (50-45, 50-45, 48-47). MacDonald wasn’t able to land a single takedown and Thompson out-struck MacDonald, 124-61 and 109-59 in significant strikes. The win for Wonderboy brings his win streak to seven in a row, the longest active streak in the welterweight division.



Co-main: Donald Cerrone defeats Patrick Cote
Cowboy Cerrone dominated Patrick Cote from the very beginning of the fight until finishing the fight by TKO at 2:36 of the third round. Cowboy knocked Cote down three times in the fight after setting the tone in the first round with two surprising takedowns. He finished the fight in the third with speed and accuracy that Cote could no longer survive.






Steve Bosse defeats Sean O’Connell
In an unforgettable slugfest, Steve Bosse bested Sean O’Connell in what is a virtual lock to win Fight of the Night honors, capturing a unanimous decision win, 29-28, 29-28, 29-27. At various points throughout the fight, Bosse and O’Connell were trading monster bombs like they had a vendetta for their opponent. Bosse looked to be KOd stiff in the first round, but after his head bounced off the canvas he recovered and started slinging big shots and spinning back fists. Bosse landed 93 significant strike to 84 for O’Connell.

 
 


Olivier Aubin-Mercier defeats Thibault Gouti
Olivier Aubin-Mercier collected his third submission win in the UFC by finishing Thibault Gouti by rear naked choke at 2:28 of the third and final round. OAM dominated the fight, out-striking Gouti, 74-63 overall and 44-29 in significant strikes. Aubin-Mercier also landed three takedowns out of eight in the bout.






Joanne Calderwood defeats Valerie Letourneau
After two sub-par performances on the heels of a great showing on The Ultimate Fighter season 20, Joanne Calderwood made a statement in Ottawa with a third-round TKO finish against Valerie Letourneau at 2:51 of the third round. Calderwood rocked Letourneau with a spinning back fist in the first round and then used her wrestling to continue winning the fight in the second. She landed a few body shots and that led to the end of the fight, as Letourneau was forced to bend at the knees after a nasty body shot before Calderwood pounced to get the finish.

Jason Saggo defeats Leandro Silva
Going into the third and deciding round, the judge’s scorecards had the fight all tied up. Leandro Silva landed a takedown in the round, but Jason Saggo did enough to sway the judges on the feet to earn a split decision win (28-29, 29-28, 29-28).






Misha Cirkunov defeats Ion Cutelaba


Misha Cirkunov extended his UFC win streak to three win a third-round submission (arm triangle) against Ion Cutelaba. Cirkunov got the best of the stand up in the fight, but Cutelaba was game to throw down and landed a number of big shots of his own. In the third, Cirkunov finally landed a blow to rock Cutelaba and he capitalized by taking him down and finding the sub.

 


Krzysztof Jotko defeats Tamdan McCrory
Krzysztof Jotko landed a devastating overhand left to knock out Tamdan McCrory at 0:59 of the very first round. McCrory fell to the ground immediately and Jotko landed two more punches before the referee was able to fly in and stop the fight. Jotko extends win streak to four, which is good for the second-longest active streak in the middleweight division.






Joe Soto defeats Chris Beal


Joe Soto was getting picked apart on the feet in the third of a fight against Chris Beal that was likely all square heading into the final frame. That’s when the former title challenger shot for a takedown and dragged Beal to the ground before taking his back and submitting him by rear naked choke at 3:39 of Round 3. Soto out-struck Beal overall at 80-67, but “The Rea; Deal” landed more significant strikes, 64-58.

Elias Theodorou defeats Sam Alvey
Elias Theodorou defeated Sam Alvey by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27). Theodorou utilized a game plan to stay away from Alvey’s power and it worked, as he landed 107 to 32 in the fight.






Randa Markos defeats Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger


Randa Markos got back on the winning track with a unanimous decision win (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) over Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger. Markos out-struck JJL, 111-78 and was ore active in the ground exchanges.

 


Colby Covington defeats Jonathan Meunier
Colby Covington grinded out Jonathan Meunier for the first two rounds before landing a spinning back fist that ultimately led to the submission win (rear naked choke) at 4:06 of the third round. Covington landed an astounding seven takedowns in the bout and took advantage of the opportunity he created with the knockdown in the third to finish the fight.






Ali Bagautinov defeats Geane Herrera


Flyweight prospect Geane Herrera took a big step up in competition with a match up against No. 10-ranked Ali Bagautinov – a former title challenger. Bagautinov came out in the first round and set the tone with what he’s known for: hard punches in bunches. Bagautinov landed 41 significant strikes to just three for Herrera in the first five minutes and cruised to a unanimous decision win (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
