Hispanics on the Rise in MMA

"In January 2013, Enrique "Henry Bure" Briones flew from Tijuana, his hometown, to Mexico City to try out for a UFC Latin America fighter development program.
"He left behind his pregnant wife and 1-year-old. If he was selected by UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby, Briones would then fly to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to take place in a six-month program -- a long time to be away from one's family, but manageable if it meant Briones could increase his chance to become a UFC fighter.
"The tryout went well and Briones, along with a small group of Latin American fighters, predominantly from Mexico, flew to the famed Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA academy in April 2013. They worked with all the coaches there, but mostly under Mike Valle, who speaks Spanish. They lived in dormitories above the gym, furnished with bunk beds and received a per diem from the UFC for food.
"Briones recalls the per diem was approximately $40 per day. He saved as much of it as he could, to send back home to his wife."
